Zuckerberg's vision of Facebook in the future

Mark Zuckerberg talks about his vision of Facebook in the future in this CNN/Fortune 500 article. According to him, Facebook will hopefully become the standardized medium for communication in the future. A "Facebook ID" will allow you to search, identify, and contact specific individuals. In my opinion, Zuckerberg's idea could be called "Phonebook 2.0"

  1. The article hints at it, but I think it's clear that Google will be the main competitor in this. A Google ID already ties into someone's email, calendar, documents, chat and video chat, Blogspot, YouTube, and is in the works to become an Open ID that can be used on outside sites as well.

Add in social networks that are still huge around the world, like Orkut, and it seems like Google has a head start on making a universal locator useful. Google search also seems likely to eventually make the phone book possibilities a reality.

Facebook's advantage may be in the fun, though - the replication of offline interactions and interpersonal banter isn't available through Google.

  2. Meanwhile, some very scary new Terms of Service have debuted over at Facebook. This article tackles them via a side-by-side comparison to other similar sites/services. Yikes!

  3. Facebook has pulled its new TOS for now - apparently claiming that they own the entire internet was ill-advised. http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=54434097130

  4. I have to say, I've felt pressure to join Facebook for job-searching purposes. In the fall I went to a meeting about ILL and I met some people from Memorial Library and they asked me if I had a facebook account. I don't and told them so. They seemed perplexed. I felt an impulse to join the club, otherwise I was a recluse, or hiding something. Maybe in the future it won't be the old boys club, but the old Facebook club with people clinking their digital photos together and updating their relationship status among friends. Did you see Sheila got engaged? Congratulations Sheila. The exclamation point will become the new period!

  5. Here is another article regarding the Facebook issue: http://blog.wired.com/business/2009/02/facebook-flap.html It also has a link to a short blurb on the growing "I Hate Facebook Club". I know many people that are part of that club and have felt justified in their refusal to join with the events of the last few days. However, as more business and job related things are being conducted via Facebook (like Alex alluded to), I wonder if this is the new email. Are facebook IDs going to be required on job applications soon? I hope not, but I would not be surprised to see that option.
